Someday you'll be on my leash.
It all started with the expiration of my driver’s license. My friend David Brown was getting married in New Jersey so I had to renew it to make the trip. The best DMV for a simple license renewal happens to be located one hundred feet from B&H Photo (South side of 34th St. near 8th Ave.), which is a mecca for professional photographers and video producers like me. So, after securing my license (in no more than thirty minutes! I wish the post office were run like NYC’s DMV!), I decided to visit B&H with the intention of acquiring a 72mm UV Haze filter for one of my lenses, and also, perhaps, to test-drive the Canon 5D MarkII, a new SLR I’ve been curious about in light of its unique spec sheet, which includes HD video capture. This camera is tough to get one’s hands on, and they had one left in stock. So I bought it to test at home with my lenses. B&H has a reassuring 14-day/200 shutter return policy on camera gear, so it was a risk-free purchase.
The next day, I was walking around the neighborhood taking pictures when I encountered a man walking his dogs. I asked his permission to shoot his adorable pooches and he seemed thrilled. The dogs loved the camera. Ten minutes later, I resumed my photo-walk with this man’s email address and phone number.
Do I smell bacon?
The next day I sent the owner a few pictures like the ones featured in this post and he loved them. A few weeks later I ended up joining him for a fascinating “fashion show” experience at Bar13 near Union Square. I had never shot in a pitch black club with deafening house music pounding nonstop in the background. It was so dark that I couldn’t actually see my own gear. I could only see to attach my flash with the aid of my iPhone screen. There were many photographers competing for time with the models and they all seemed to be taking very similar shots. I was glad to come away from the experience with some unique shots and a pocket full of business cards.
Bad hair day? No... "fashionable" hair day!
In fact, she was wearing clothes.
We’ll see what happens next. I love New York.
